The Royal Purple received second place for general excellence at the Wisconsin Newspaper Association convention and fourth place for Best of Show at the Best of Midwest convention over the weekend.
Three staff members also earned individual awards at WNA: Editor in Chief Christopher Kuhagen, Photo Editor Tim Gumz and Sports Editor Matt Gardner.
Kuhagen, a senior, took first place in the feature writing category for his article,“Vowing to take down cancer.” Kuhagen, who has won nine individual awards at the state and Midwest level in three years, also took second in the sports reporting category for his story, “Long Road Traveled.”
Gumz, a senior, took first place in the graphics category for the graphic he created for, “University Salaries: National Market driving force for wages.”
Gardner, also a senior, took third place in the feature writing category for his article, “Love, running and a sense of duty.”
The Royal Purple also took first place and honorable mention for best editorial for the pieces, “Differential tuition policy a step in right direction,” and “Put the ‘student’ back in student government.”
