Local bands, a dunk tank and a fashion show will be the featured events at this year’s 91.7 The Edge’s annual fund drive.
“The success of the fund drive is based solely on the participation from people on campus or in the community,” WSUW News Director Kyle Johns said. “It’s the people who participate in the dunk tank, who come to see the bands and bring a crowd to the fashion show, that really help us out.”
The fund drive, which has been held on campus for more than 15 years, seeks to raise money and awareness for the student-run campus radio station.
Beginning tomorrow, eight local bands will perform at Pumpers and Mitchell’s Bar on the Mitchell’s side in downtown Whitewater.
WSUW Productions Director Justin Bartmann said the radio station has worked with some of the bands before and the others were recommended.
The bands are donating the money they would be making to the radio station and several businesses in the area are sponsoring the events.
Johns said they hope to raise $2,500 to $3,000 during the course of the drive.
WSUW General Manager Brian Lucas said the radio station receives money from SUFAC to pay for its day-to-day operations, but they budget for more than that and the money from the fund drive helps make up for the other costs.
In addition to the band performances, a dunk tank will be set up at the UC Mall on April 23.
The dunk tank, which has been donated by True Value, will cost $1 per throw.
Maurice’s clothing store is sponsoring a fashion show on April 24 in the UC Ballroom. Doors for the show open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets for the fashion show are $1 for students with ID and $2 for students without. WSUW will have a table set up on today in the UC to sell tickets.
Lucas said the main goal of the fund drive is to, of course, make money, but he said he hopes the drive will create positive awareness about the radio station.
“The other part of the fund drive is to let people know that we exist and that we have fun things they can associate with the station and get people involved,” Lucas said.
