It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child, but according to Holly McFaul, director of UW-Whitewater Children’s Center, “it takes a campus to raise a child.”

The children’s playground on campus has been demolished and awaits a total remodel. The Children’s Center is looking for volunteers to help rebuild the playground over four days.

“The children’s center has been undergoing renovation for three years, and as for the playground, it’s time for an update,” McFaul said.

Fundraisers have been held to raise money for the remodeling.

“With the fundraising from the families and from college of business students, we raised over $8,000,” McFaul said.

Sidney Nelson, a lead teaching assistant at the Children’s Center said the construction will heavily incorporate nature.

“It’s a great way to put everything … in one area where the children will be in a safe secure environment,” Nelson said. “They’ll have various activities and various things to interact with at the same time.”

The Children’s Center gives priority to UW-Whitewater students with children, then gives open spaces to faculty and community members with children.

Kids ranging from 12 months to 5 years are accepted at the center.

“I believe volunteering at the Children’s Center is great reflection, looking inside yourself and finding what’s important in you and allow you to be an integral role in these children’s lives,” Nelson said. “We try very hard to make sure we are utilizing the talents and abilities of UW-Whitewater students.”
