Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process by which companies forcibly extract fossil fuels from underground deposits. Experts say the process pumps several million gallons of water and metric tons of chemicals and sand into a well to shatter rock formations and force fossil fuels to the surface. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 specifically exempts companies from reporting what chemicals they use to mine these wells.

It was organized by the Dean’s Advisory Council to inform students of priorities of the College and changes they can expect to see. Chemistry student earns esteemed Goldwater Scholarship

Over the summer, junior chemistry student, Marie Nider, was one of six Wisconsin undergraduate students to win the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. This was the first in the school’s history. “It felt great to win this, but I have to give credit to the chemistry department for pushing me to apply and to Dr. Chan, who has been my mentor the whole way through,” Nider said.
