The wrestling team began the Division III national championships just as it did the entire season: With a deep hole to dig out of.
The team began the season 0-7, and each of the five wrestlers’ start in the championships mirrored the team’s start to the season as they all lost their first matches.
One tournament remains to separate the best from the rest.
Five wrestlers will attempt to notch their name in the UW-Whitewater record books at the national tournament in La Crosse over the weekend.
Any team in a sport that falls behind at the beginning of a season dreams of a miraculous resurgence. The wrestling team no longer has to dream of this revival for it is now a reality.

A person can only be a leader if others are willing to follow. The young wrestling team has rallied behind lone senior, James Zarate, on the way to another successful season. Zarate has displayed the work ethic and tremendous leadership the underclassmen need in the adjustment to college level wrestling.
