IndyCar drivers make most of cancellation

By Justin St. Peter

Rain cancelled the IndyCar test day at the Milwaukee Mile, but it did not keep some drivers from making the most of the situation.

Graham Rahal drove his Porsche 911 and Marco Andretti took a video of himself driving a rental car around the track as the teams and drivers attempted to stay loose.

Despite that, a majority of the drivers said they were frustrated with the rain cancelling the test.

“Today is completely lost,” veteran driver Justin Wilson said. “Tomorrow I think we can do some things to get out there and get a baseline setup.”

Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter Reay said he used the cancelled day to catch up on things that he fell behind on after his crazy schedule following the big race.

Hunter Reay may have a leg up on his competitors because he has won three races at the Mile, including the last two.

“I don’t think it would be horrible if the test rained out,” Hunter Reay said. “I love getting on track here anytime I can [though], so that side of it would be a downturn.”

James Hinchcliffe, Indy Car’s most popular driver of 2012, also tried to make the most out of the day. During multiple interviews, he interrupted his teammates, walked through TV camera shots, and other things that elicited laughs from everyone.

Hinchcliffe talked about the track in a rare moment of seriousness.

“It’s a tricky little track, and the guys that have done it more have a few secrets to put in effect here,” Hinchcliffe said. “In the race, you are so busy. If you are not passing your own guys for position, you are in lap traffic. You are always working something.”

All of the teams in attendance were planning on testing in Iowa on Thursday but have scrapped those plans. As of Wednesday afternoon, they were planning on staying in Milwaukee to test and leaving early to make it to Iowa on Friday.

Instead of having 12 teams testing on Wednesday, 15 teams are now scheduled to be on the track on Thursday.

The drivers said they would watch a movie together Wednesday and find a good place for dinner for the rest of the day.

The ABC Supply Co. Wisconsin 250 has been moved back from its usual spot after the Indy 500 to August 17. Because of this, the race will be the third-last race of the year and will be in the heat of the championship battle.

Hunter Reay said he is looking forward to testing because the Milwaukee Mile is different from the rest of the tracks on the circuit.

“Things that you learn at other racetracks don’t apply here,” Hunter Reay said. “This place is its own beast. What you find here, stays here.”
