Power Dominates the Mile

Track position was the name of the game at the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest on Sunday.

Will Power’s No. 12 Team Penske Chevy started on the pole and commanded the field by leading 229 of the 250 laps. Power won by 2.79 seconds over teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

“It’s a race I had in my mind all year that I have wanted to come and win,” Power said. “I really like being on ovals; they have become my favorite tracks.”

Power stretched his points lead from 4 to 39 points over teammate Helio Castroneves who finished 11th. It was Power’s third win of the year and 24th of his nine year career.

With his second place finish, Montoya still has a title shot with two races left. That didn’t stop him from being disappointed.

“If you would have asked me at the beginning of the year that I would have been mad with a second place finish, I would have said you that you were crazy,” Montoya said.

Dixon and Josef Newgarden rounded out the top five. Ryan Briscoe was sixth and Pagenaud was the last car on the lead lap, coming home seventh.

The race featured only one caution, when rookie Carlos Munoz tapped the wall in turn three at lap 130.

“You would usually expect two or three cautions,” Power said. It (The caution) put everyone on the same strategy to finish the race.”

However, there were plenty of tense moments as the leaders were held up many lapped cars throughout the race. A frustrated Montoya elaborated on that point.

“I think Will had a really good car, but I really killed my front tires trying to pass traffic,” Montoya said. “I was gaining on him but then I got past Marco (Andretti). And then Hinch (James Hinchcliffe) came out of the pits right in front of me.”

Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay started 19th and worked his way up to fourth by lap 100. 67 laps later, he had a mechanical failure going into turn one. He was able to save the car and limp around the track, but his day was done with a disappointing 21st place finish.

The Verizon IndyCar series will head to Sonoma next Sunday August 24th at 4 pm on NBCSN.

After the win, Power made a trip to the infield care center to get his ears cleaned after having a creampuff stuffed in his ear canal during the post-race celebration in victory lane.

“My ears are now clean and dry,” Power joked. “The lady was there for a while.”

With clean ears and a 39 point lead, Power is certainly heavily favored to take home his first career championship.
