As you are probably well aware of right now, election season is right around the corner with November 4th being designated as the big day where you get to decide the fate of several politicians who are looking to represent us, not only as residents of Wisconsin, but as residents of the United States of America: a nation that is the true epitome of freedom and democracy throughout the world. I couldn’t be more fortunate to be a member of this great society. As much as I am excited to finally vote, I notice that there is an ominous shadow of uncertainty on the horizon; a shadow that, much like Schrödinger’s cat, can determine the fate of this great state in terms of future success or certain doom. You may be thinking to yourself, “What’s this dude even thinking about? These kinds of things are no big deal.” Just so that way you don’t think of me as some crazy weirdo, allow me to explain my reasoning.
This shadow that I mentioned represents what will happen on whether Scott Walker or Mary Burke gets elected to the governorship of this state. On one hand, you have Governor Walker, who, along with his cronies, has tried to restrict the rights of honest, hardworking people through various means: whether it is through restricting the right to vote, restricting the right to unionize and collectively bargain, or restricting the right to marry the one that you love. He has also shown an inability to create jobs and has created only 40% of the jobs that he promised to create (100,000/250,000 jobs). On the other hand, you have Mary Burke, who has the job-creating and business expertise as well as allowing Wisconsinites to fully practice their rights as protected by the Constitution.
November 4th is a week away and we as students of this university have an important decision: a decision so important that can choose our collective destiny and determine what will be in our future as people living in this state. You will be the one who determines whether or not Schrödinger’s cat is alive or dead. You will be making one of the most important decisions in the history of this state. Don’t let yourself get persuaded by the half-truths and noise on the television and radio whose intentions want only the wealthy and powerful to succeed in an oligarchic paradise while the honest working man suffers just like they do today. If you truly value this democracy, if you truly believe that everyone has a fair shot at the American Dream, if you believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that there is such a thing as justice, then vote for Mary Burke. She will lead us to the prosperity that we all deserve and make this state a symbol of success that all states aspire to be.
