Men’s Tennis flies to Midwest Regionals

The UW-Whitewater Men’s Tennis team competed at the four-day ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Saint Peter, Minnesota on Sept. 27-30. This tournament featured 26 of the top teams in the region hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College.

On Friday, the men’s team sent four singles players to the Round of 32, three of those players advanced to the Round of 16 before being defeated. Freshman Danila Borovykh, sophomore Ryan Mitchell and sophomore Alex Gray all lost in straight sets. The men’s team also sent two doubles teams to the Round of 16. Borovykh and senior Rober Rider lost to the No.1 seeds (Gustavus Adolphus) 8-5.

After Saturday, only senior Zach Wood and Alex Gray remained by reaching the semifinals of the doubles draw.

Wood and Gray, a No. 4 seeded doubles team, defeated opponents from Carleton at the Round of 16 with 8-7. At the quarterfinal, they defeated the hosting team Gustavus Adolphus with 8-4.

The team is set to face No. 5 Cole Schneider and Nyathi Motlojoa from Luther College in Iowa.

The singles and doubles champions and runners up from the ITA Regional Champions will advance to the ITA Cup. The ITA Cup is comprised of eight regional champions from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and junior/community colleges.

The teams competing at this year’s tournament included: Bethel, Carleton, Carroll, Carthage, Central, Coe, Cornell, Concordia-Moorhead, Concordia-Wisconsin, Cornell, Dubuque, Grinnell, Gustavus, Hamline, Loras, Luther, Macalester, Northwestern-St. Paul, Saint John’s, Saint Mary’s, St. Olaf, St. Scholastica, St. Thomas, Wartburg, UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse.
