UW-W Rugby team opens season

The season never ends for the UW-Whitewater Men’s Club Rugby team. The fall campaign ended a couple of months ago, and the spring “7s” is around the corner starting in April.

“[I hope the team] can play some good competition … We would really like to get our young guys competitive experience so that we can keep the tradition of going to Nationals,” said Will Herman, the club president.

The Warhawks really want to use this “7s” season to make sure they are in good shape when the “15s” start after the summer, and of course, try to win the “7s” National Championship. Rugby “7s” is a 7 on 7 style of play in which the Warhawks have dominated season play the last few years.

“Coming off of three straight National Championship games in our spring season, the expectation for this spring is to continue that streak … Barring injury I think we have what it takes to surprise some teams this spring,” said team captain Levi Van Lanen.

As a club team, rugby doesn’t have the same access to funds as some of the other UWW teams despite being one of the most dominant on campus. Nick Hammel, another player for the Warhawks, hopes to use this “7s” season and the entire spring as an opportunity to “do fundraising so we [Men’s Rugby] have money for traveling to games and tournaments.”

If the team’s National Championship streak continues this spring, Whitewater is looking like a rugby dynasty.
