UW-W student’s body found near city limits

UW-Whitewater junior Mark Wegener’s body was found this morning by searchers after he had gone missing early Saturday morning.

The 20-year-old Merton native was found in the Whitewater Limestone Quarry after attending a party near the intersection of Boone Court and Center Street. Wegener was last heard from at 1:42 a.m. and last seen around 1 a.m.

Photo submitted.

Wegener’s death is believed to be accidental.

In an interview with Todays TMJ4, Interim Chief of Police Lisa Otterbacher said the death appeared accidental and it seemed he had fallen before he had died.

It is believed Wegener had been drinking at the party, but friends felt he was able to walk home by himself.

Police suspect no foul play.

Fliers were placed throughout the town by his family in hopes of finding Wegener.

Wegener’s last phone call was traced to the intersection of Prairie and Center Streets after he left the party to walk home alone. That was the last time Wegener was heard from until his body was found Monday morning.
