Homecoming royalty
October 19, 2020
It’s that time of year again, Warhawks! Homecoming 2020 is a go! It might look a little different than it has in previous years, but it’s here nevertheless. And what Homecoming celebration would be complete without a homecoming court?
Things may not be happening the same ways they have in the past, but they are still happening. The selection process has been altered slightly. Court selection is done through a combination of an application submission and an interview, should the committee elect to deem a candidate qualified to continue.
“Going through the application process and trying to win royalty is such a special process that you’ll never forget it,” said Asia Kelly. “So we want to make sure that even though things aren’t normal, we can still provide that unforgettable experience.”
Kelly is the Homecoming Court Coordinator. As such, she is in charge of all the applicants and oversees the application and selection processes. She takes a lot of pride in her position, and takes her job seriously.
“As homecoming court coordinator, I want to make it my job that applicants still get the most out of this, especially with everything being virtual rather than in person,” she said.
The changes to the Court selection process are pretty similar to the ones people have been seeing throughout the school year. The submission is sent online and is reviewed by the committee, and the committee then decides if a candidate is qualified to move on.
“I applied because I wanted to do more for homecoming this year. Since homecoming is online due to COVID, I figured applying for homecoming court would help me feel more involved with homecoming and the different events going on throughout the week,” court applicant Kelsey Peshek said.
Formal interviews for those chosen were held on Oct. 12. After some deliberation, a final decision on the top 5 candidates will crown this year’s official Homecoming 2020 Court. This decision will take place on Oct. 16. Royalty receives a plaque and goody bags as well as campus-wide recognition as homecoming royalty. Though there are many different benefits to being royalty, there are perks to even simply applying. Every applicant is entered into a raffle to get a prime parking spot in this year’s drive-in movie event.
