Experienced group leads the way

Good things are pointing in the right direction for the women’s soccer team. After claiming their first-ever share of the WIAC championship last season, the Warhawks have the chance to repeat.

The only thing standing in their way are the UW-Stevens Point Pointers, who have won the last three conference championships.
With senior Emily Gerber returning, head coach Greg Henschell said he expects the team to have the season like last year.

“Oh yeah, I mean quite honestly, we’d like to get rid of that one [loss] this year,” Henschell laughed.

The ’Hawks carry into the season with an experienced squad, returning ten people, only losing two.

Gerber, who recently broke UW-Whitewater’s all time-scoring leader record returning, are among returnees along with other first team all-WIAC members from last year (sophomore Samantha Hoerchner, junior Emily Stocks, senior Kelsey Strohm and junior Christina Tooren).
If the ’Hawks want to remain serious contenders in the WIAC, they must fill the shoes of Tooren who recently broke her arm.

“Well we’re waiting on Christina Tooren to come back,” Henschell said. “She was our leading scorer last year. I also think Lisowe will be big too, she is having a good start to her senior year.”

The ’Hawks have started out the year 2-2 and will face Illinois Wesleyan University tomorrow night, and then will start conference play at 2 p.m. against UW-La Crosse at home.
