After taking care of business at home last week, the Warhawks went into St. Peter, Minn., for the ITA Regional Championships.
Schaefer and Bayliss will represent the Midwest at the ITA National Small College Championship in Mobile, Ala., starting October 13-16.
The team’s confidence remained sky high all the way through the final day of the championship. Senior Kalla Schaefer won the singles title and then she teamed up with sophomore Alexandra Bayliss to win the doubles title.
Schaefer advanced through matches on Friday and Saturday, and played two final matches on Sunday to claim the singles trophy.
She defeated Kathryn Schmidt of Carleton 6-2, 5-7 and 6-4 to win the top half of the bracket. In the finals, she faced off against Mckennah Edwards of Saint Mary’s and went on to beat her 6-2, 6-2 for the individual title.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” Schaeffer said. “I didn’t play in this tournament last year and I didn’t do very well my sophomore year.”
Bayliss and Schaefer finished off the doubles tournament with ease closing out Megan Gaard and Alex Erickson of Gustavus 6-3, 6-3.
“To win both singles and doubles is quite an achievement,” said Head Coach Frank Barnes.
Barnes said it was quite an accomplishment considering the fact that only eight singles champions and eight doubles champions from the whole country will be represented in Alabama.
“I don’t think there has been a more dominating performance from any school at the ITA Regional Championships,” Barnes said.
While the team’s success prepares them for the WIAC Conference Championship on Oct. 22, it also prepares them for the spring season leading up to the NCAA tournament. Coach Barnes said he hopes their performance at the ITA Championships will help them move up in the team rankings.
Last season, they made it to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament and the goal for this year is the round of eight.
