After starting the season 0-4, the Warhawks’ two seniors, midfielder Ryan Boyd and forward Kevin Kron, stepped up to lead the team to six consecutive wins. The men will look to make it seven straight tonight at 7 p.m. against North Park University on the Vikings’ field.
Senior leadership on the men’s soccer team has carried them to a more positive attitude going forward.
“There is a great attitude on the team,” Boyd said. “Everyone is trying to work to get better everyday. I think our team chemistry is the best it has been in a long time. That’s saying a lot, our team is on the money this year, and there is the potential for the team to be better.”
Boyd and Kron work together on and off the field to provide a positive influence on the younger players.
According to Kron, the two seniors fall into the regular roles of leading warm-ups, but they also lead by example.
“[The younger players] do look up to us and they do follow us in the sense that we are leaders and upperclassmen,” Boyd said. “We’ve been through everything that they’re going through, on the field at least. We’ve been there, we’ve done that and we’ve had a lot of success in the past.”
The seniors took control as leaders and brought the team out of the 0-4 pit to bring the men’s confidence back to where it needed to be.
“It really was a lot of work to get people into the right mindset after the 0-4 start,” Boyd said. “We definitely try and lead by example. We just had to do the things we could do and control the things we could control to get better.”
Coach Greg Henschel believes Boyd and Kron are excellent seniors to have on the team.
“I am appreciative of their passion for our team,” Henschel said. “They are good people that I am proud to have representing our soccer team and athletic department … and it’s also nice that they happen to be good soccer players as well.”
Kron believes the team has come out of the hole because of the six consecutive wins.
“We met as a team and got behind one common goal that we all really wanted and that was to win conference like we did last year,” Kron said. “We finally got united all together and we’ve been doing well ever since.”
Boyd broke his foot last season and was out for 21 weeks before he was cleared to play. He said it has been difficult getting back to physical fitness after being out for so long.
“I missed a lot of games last year and it’s been really hard working back to this point,” Boyd said.
Last year, Kron played a lot of games, but did not score many points; he transferred to UW-Whitewater and did not have a definite position to play on the team until conference when he played as a forward.
“It has taken a lot of hard work,” Kron said. “I don’t think people realize how much hard work and effort that goes into a season like this.”
Both Boyd and Kron enjoy their roles of senior leaders and believe that there is a lot of give and take from all members on the team.
“We know and understand that we don’t know everything yet and we are still learning,” Kron said. “Even though they get a lot of stuff from us, we get a lot of things from them.”
