Since losing the conference opener at UW-Stevens Point on Sept. 21, the volleyball team has erupted offensively winning seven matches in a row.
After starting the season with an 8-4 record, the No. 22 ranked ’Hawks have now improved their record to 15-4, including a 9-0 record at home.
The ’Hawks take their seven-match winning streak on the road at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Elmhurst College, and will put their perfect home record on the line at 7 p.m. Tuesday against UW-Platteville.
The team opened up last week with a 3-1 victory over visiting UW-Lacrosse. Errors were down after committing only 17, which was 10 less than what UW-La Crosse committed.
The offensive power continued into the weekend as the team swept the Illinois Wesleyan Barker Chevrolet Volleyball Classic 4-0.
The sweep began on Friday with a breeze through Robert Morris-Peoria and Culver-Stockton colleges, winning both contests 3-0. The Warhawks finished off the tournament with two 3-1 victories over North Central and Illinois Wesleyan respectively.
The seven-match winning streak started after a disappointing loss to conference foe UW-Stevens Point, an opponent the Warhawks have handled in recent years. The loss to the Pointers was a wake-up call to Head Coach Stacy Boudreau and to some of the players.
“We would like to have the loss at Stevens Point back, but they are a good team,” Boudreau said.
Senior Sofia Sanchez really showed some leadership this past weekend, propelling the ’Hawks in more than one way Boudreau said.
“She is a good leader for us,” Boudreau said. “If she is struggling on offense she makes up for it on defense.”
With Sanchez and the rest of the squad excelling, Boudreau said, she is feeling more comfortable on the court and both the offense and defense are coming together nicely.
“We can’t let up, we have to work hard every game,” Sanchez said.
