The Warhawk women’s golf team poses for a picture at their home course in Janesville during the Fall Classic in 2022. This season the team hopes to build off last year’s success and continue dominating the WIAC championship.

The UW-Whitewater women’s golf team is coming off their sixth straight WIAC championship and are picking up right where they left off, placing first in the Battle on the Border.

The Warhawks were led by junior Elle Johnson who shot 72 Saturday, which is the second best round in Warhawk program history. She finished with a total of 149 and would be the top individual of the tournament and would finish seven strokes ahead of second place.

Whitewater would also have three other golfers placing in the top 10 individually. Sophomore Abbie Reiser would finish fourth with a score of 159 only three strokes behind the second place finishers. Junior Kallie Lux would finish in sixth place with a score of 161. Lily Sheppard would finish ninth with a score of 164. The Warhawks would finish with a 633 as a team which was 12 strokes ahead of second place.

Apart from the main squad that placed first. The Warhawks had another group that placed fifth in the tournament. Sophomore Emily Akers shot a 166 leading the way for the Warhawks second squad finishing 11th individually. Haley Myers would also have a strong finish with a score of 167 finishing 14th individually. This Warhawks squad would finish with a 678 as a team outperforming some of the other team’s main squads.

“One strength of the team is our depth. We have a lot of competition for the team lineup to be in the top five. So that will keep them on their toes,” says head coach Andrea Wieland.

The Warhawks would finish with all their golfers  finishing in the top 60 for individual performances.

As the competition gets tougher for the Warhawks Wieland says they still need to improve around the green and making more putts. They will have a couple tournaments with teams that are ranked top 15 including Illinois Wesleyan and Saint Catherine’s University, as well as the tough competition in WIAC play with both UW-La Crosse and UW-Stout. Whitewater will look to continue their success in their next tournament where they will head to Waverly Iowa for the Wartburg Invite.
