Our universities have the critical mission of preparing students for future success. As I travel and meet with people all across the state, I am energized by the profound commitment and impact our staff and faculty have in improving the lives of our students and so many others throughout the state and beyond. You help change the trajectory of people’s lives in extraordinary ways through both education and the creation of new knowledge. It is why the current discussions around the pay plan are very concerning.

It is clear that higher education, and the UW System in particular, are facing a host of significant headwinds. You know it and I know it. We are living through those challenges every day. In the face of those barriers, you have remained focused on our mission. I respect that enormously. I also want to be very clear that I will be a relentless advocate on behalf of our public universities and the faculty and staff who are the very heart of who we are and what we do.

The challenges we face will test us, but they also strengthen my resolve to champion our critical work. I am taking our message on the road, sharing how proud we can all be about the tremendous opportunities our universities provide.
