When the weather turns chilly and temperatures begin to drop, spending time outdoors might not be your first thought. But, in Whitewater, we’re fortunate to have a local gem: the Ice Age Trail. Perhaps you’ve driven by it on Highway 12, but what you might not know is how accessible and wonderful this natural treasure is.
The Ice Age Trail is a trail that stretches over 1,000 miles across Wisconsin. It doesn’t just offer the same views, either. It’s a variety of different scenes including rolling hills, forests, prairies, and lakes – each revealing a part of Wisconsin’s natural history. It’s like a journey through time, showing you how the land was shaped by glaciers 10,000 years ago.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday, a community walk is being offered on the Ice Age Trail. These walks take place at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, giving you a couple of hours to enjoy the great outdoors before dark. To join, all you need to do is meet up at the Highway 12 crossing 15 minutes prior, which is just a quick five mile drive east of Whitewater. The parking lot at Highway 12 & Sherwood Forest Rd DNR is where you’ll want to be. Just remember, to take part, you’ll need a Wisconsin state park pass. It’s not just for this walk; it’s like a golden ticket to all the state parks and trails in the area.
What’s great about these weekly walks is that they cover around three miles – not too long and not too short. You don’t have to be an expert hiker. It’s not a race, so you can go at your own pace, take your time, and enjoy the beautiful views. You can even spot some wildlife along the way if you’re lucky. Plus, there’s a good chance you’ll meet new people who love the outdoors just as much as you do. So it’s a win-win.
“The weekly hikes are amazing in the fact that we have been providing quality hikes to the public for 23 years,” said Tourism Council Member, Andy Whitney. This hike is not only for exercise but to get involved in the community.
As the temperature drops and winter arrives, you might be tempted to stay indoors, but don’t let the chill keep you cooped up. The Ice Age Trail has a unique charm during the winter months. The snow-covered landscapes and frozen waterways turn it into a real-life winter wonderland.
So, grab your walking shoes, bundle up to stay warm, and come join in on the fun of the Ice Age Trail’s weekly community walks. It’s an excellent way to stay active and connected with nature. You’ll create memories, explore the calmness of the great outdoors, and discover a sense of peace right here in your own town.
