The Wisconsin original show “Guys on Ice” was performed Saturday night at the Young Auditorium. The show is a comedic musical about two guys out ice fishing. The play was originally part of Wisconsin’s Sequential Celebrations and has toured around the state as it displays the fun of ice fishing. “Guys on Ice” has played in Beloit, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee.
UW-Whitewater wanted “Guys on Ice” to perform here so that students could experience the performance. The show was only at Whitewater for a day, so if you did not see it you won’t be able to because of how exclusive it was. People who were fortunate enough to have tickets to watch the show all seemed to enjoy the performance.
“Guys on Ice” is a story of two fishing buddies, Lloyd and Marvin, who are both having trouble with their love lifes. Lloyd and Marvin are preparing to be on a TV show which they hope will turn their lives around. They also have to deal with Ernie the Moocher who tries to steal their stuff.
The show did an excellent job balancing out humor and drama, while it was a comedy there were some serious tones to it as well. The actors did well with their portrayal of the characters. Each one understood what the role was and did a good job bringing it to life on the stage. The cast was only made up of three people, which made it more impressive with how well they carried the show for its full duration.
The set was filled with Wisconsin staples, primarily in the form of beer and Packers memorabilia. While some might think it was boring, it still felt very well done. The performance showcased a handful of songs that were odd but that was part of what made them fun to listen too. There was no way of knowing what the next song would be about, as the musical numbers ranged from the topics of snow suits to beer. The songs in the show stretched from low pitched tunes about love, to the high pitched tunes of fishing, all in shanty style.
Young Auditorium will next play host to “Chuck Owens & ReSurgence” Wednesday Nov. 8, and will welcome “The Company Men: Timeless Hits Reimagined” for their Saturday night performance Nov. 11.
