How do I motivate myself to keep up with a workout plan before the holidays?
With the holiday season right around the corner, everyone is looking forward to the abundance of delicious food. All of these carbohydrates and calories can be really hard to balance without a workout routine.
First, let me start off by saying that everyone is different and not all people are inspired by the same types of techniques. Sticking to a workout is an issue many people find difficult, including me.
That being said, here are some tips on how to stay on track during this holiday season. Combining some of them together or just focusing on one can help to stay motivated and make exercise a part of your daily life.
1. Keep a workout/eating “diary.” Writing down the amount of food you eat compared to how much you work out, may help motivate you to accomplish your goals.
2. Make a schedule of when and what areas of your body you want to work out each week.
3. Print out a picture of your “ideal body” to keep you motivated during workouts.
4. Get a workout buddy to hit the gym with and keep you going.
5. Set a goal. Having something to work towards makes it easier to want to exercise.
6. Get a good workout playlist to keep you moving. If music isn’t your thing, try an audio book or a television series to watch.
7. Try not to slack off while working out, otherwise it might become a habit.
8. Reward yourself. It’s okay to reward yourself with food if it is once in a while. Other rewards could be a movie with a friend, extra hour of sleep or an hour of relaxation.
9. Start small and build up. Make it simple and aim for 30-45 minutes the first few days.
10. Switch it up! Running everyday will get boring unless you are really passionate about it. Try lifting weights, yoga or biking once a week.
These are just a few ideas to get you started. Of course, there are plenty of other options out there to keep you on track. The key is to find something that works for you.
Though some may disagree, I think it is OK to take a small break from working out during the holiday season. There’s nothing wrong with giving yourself a few days to focus on family, friends and food as long as you get back to your routine once things calm down. Good luck!
