From growing up with each other and not knowing what would happen next between two young athletes, the Beightol siblings find themselves back together competing for the UW-Whitewater track and field team. As they line up for their events, they add another critical bonding moment and also maintain a legacy to the Warhawks and the Beightol family.
However, freshman Sophie and junior Caleb each have different goals for where they are at personally.
“My goal is to win nationals individually, and then once we get to outdoor with our relay as well, hopefully as a team,” said Caleb Beightol, who competes in short sprints. “So last year, we came up short with getting a team trophy at nationals, both indoor and outdoor. I know that’s a big goal with me and a lot of the other guys in different event groups too, is that we want to kind of build on what happened last year with getting a bunch of guys to Nationals and then actually get it done and get that team trophy.”
Sophie reflected a similar sentiment.
“Right now, I would say my main goal is to qualify for conference in my individual races,” said Sophie Beightol, who competes in the long sprints.
Furthermore, each of them have their own personal goals but they still support each other.
“It was nice to come in, especially on the track team, to have someone that I already knew and could ask questions since it’s a lot different from high school, rather than having to ask other people that I wouldn’t feel as comfortable asking,” Sophie Beightol said.
As the older sibling, Caleb mentioned that he loves having her there and that he is always there for her.
If there is one thing about competitive siblings they always push each other to the last rep either in the gym or during an event.
“The one time we are sometimes together is in the weight room,” Caleb Beightol said. “I’ll come over and help her with an exercise if she needs it, and push her to try and say, ‘hey, maybe you could do a little more weight’ or something like that, just to try to get that extra edge and more development there.”
However, just cheering each other on gives that extra motivation knowing that they are also representing their team and family every time they step out there.
“I think it’s really cool, especially considering that our mom went here as well and was also on the track team and was an All-American when she was here,” Caleb Beightol said. “So I think it’s cool that she gets to see that we’re continuing on with what she built when she was here and that she also gets to watch it as it’s unfolding.”
Getting to compete with siblings on the same team at the college level is a dream come true for many. For the Beightol siblings, carrying that family legacy adds the perfect touch to their collegiate careers.
