The Warhawks, ranked No. 4 by the latest D3hoops.com poll, went 1-1 last week winning 77-58 at UW-Platteville and losing 60-58 at UW-Superior.
The team has two regular season games remaining: 7 p.m. tonight at home against UW-Oshkosh and on the road Saturday at UW-River Falls.
The ’Hawks cruised in the win over the Pioneers, surrendering the lead only once all game with 6:34 left in the first half. They outscored Platteville in the paint 42-36 and out rebounded them 30-19.
The Pioneers’ bench did outscore the ’Hawks’ 32-17, but the team’s leading scorer, Brett Stangel, was held to 3-of-9 shooting and finished with 10 points. Coach Pat Miller was pleased with the outcome.
“The UW-Platteville game was a solid effort overall, although we didn’t play great offensively in the first half,” Miller said. “In the second half, we did a great job of attacking them with dribble penetration and Eric Bryson had a great game.”
Bryson finished well above his season average of nine points by shooting 8-of-10 with two three-pointers. He tied teammate Chris Davis for a game-high 21 points.
The ’Hawks fell to the Yellowjackets in the final seconds of the game after a late three-pointer.
The team was up 58-56 with 13 seconds remaining after a Davis free throw. The second attempt missed and was rebounded by UW-Superior, which allowed Ben Aalfs to hit a three-pointer to put his team up 59-58 with two seconds left.
“The UW-Superior game was frustrating because we didn’t execute well offensively in terms of ball security,” Miller said. The Yellowjackets picked up 12 points off of 14 ’Hawks’ turnovers.
The ’Hawks outscored their opponents in the paint 26-18 and out rebounded them 30-25, but the Yellowjackets went 9-of-10 from the line, while the ’Hawks finished 3-of-4.
“We needed people to step up and we didn’t play with the intensity that we needed on the road,” Miller said. “It wasn’t just that we turned the ball over. It was how we turned it over with some bad passes, which are mental mistakes.”
Junior Luke Knoble said the team didn’t have the level of focus needed.
“We didn’t play as well defensively against Superior as we could have,” Knoble said. “We had a tough stretch on the road and need to just refocus for our last couple games.”
Miller agreed the team was not focused enough.
“That tells me we’re not dialed in and if we want to be an elite team we can’t do those things,” Miller said. “Hopefully we can learn from this and move forward.”
