Andersen Library needs to be open longer

Have you ever been in the situation where you wake up and say, “OK, today I am going to get a lot done.” You then get all your stuff together and go to the library. Only when you get there, you realize it is closed.

This usually happens to me on Sundays. I get to the library and find out it won’t be open until 1 p.m. Maybe it’s just me, but that is really late. I want to be at the library at 10 a.m. and done by 1 p.m.

Yes, they are then open until 2 a.m. but who wants to be up that late doing homework? The hours are a little backwards.

The majority of other UW System libraries are open 24 hours some days, open at 10 or 11 a.m. Sundays and stay open later on Saturdays.

UW-Madison has many libraries on their campus, but the College Library is open 24 hours Monday through Thursday and opens at 10 a.m. Sundays.
UW-Steven’s Point and UW-Eau Claire both open at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Andersen does cater to students when exam time comes around, but that is only for a couple weeks each semester. There is much more they could do during the rest of the semester.

I realize for our library to be open 24 hours per day would be a big change and cost a lot of money.

The university might have to weigh that over what is beneficial for the students.

It’s not like there wouldn’t be any students to work overnight and there would only need to be one or two there at a time.

Even if the university cannot keep the library open 24 hours, I do think there should be at least one computer lab open 24 hours. Students who live off-campus do not have access to computer labs like on-campus students do.

Changing the library hours is something that all students would benefit from. Shouldn’t the university do everything in its power to benefit the students?
