Steam billows from Fricker hall basement

Many people living on the west side of campus might have seen steam coming out of the basement of Fricker Hall Monday evening.

Campus Police Chief Matt Kiederlen said he doesn’t know exactly why the incident happened, but he said one of the pressure release valves in the steam system popped because the pressure had become too high.

“Everything worked as it was supposed to,” Kiederlen said. “When it popped, that steam is directed outside. It probably looked pretty horrendous but the reality is it was actually safe. The appropriate safeguards did work.”

Kiederlen said nobody was injured and didn’t know the extent of the damage. Kiederlen said the valve has been replaced and everything should be back to normal.

Residence Life Associate Director Terry Tumbarello said there was never a fire and that it was purely steam coming out of the building.
