Gymnasts win first ever national championship

After finishing second last season, the UW-Whitewater gymnastics team earned the share of the Division-III national championship in Brockport, New York Friday.

This marks the fifth national championship for UW-Whitewater this season (football, men’s basketball, men’s wheelchair basketball, women’s wheelchair basketball).

The Warhawks scored tied with Brockport  (188.5), good for fifth best score in school history.

Sophomore Katie Thompson and senior Mary Kate Young earned All-American in all-around, marking the first time in school history that two from that category earned that status.

Thompson finished second while Young finished fourth. Young also broke the school’s record on balance beam with a 9.75.

Today will conclude the rest of the meet, with individuals who advanced.

Thompson, freshman Cici Talcott, Young and junior Siri Wischmann will compete in vault while sophomore Allyse Dieringer, Thompson, and freshman Cami Gilman will compete in the uneven parallel bars.  Young and Wischmann will compete on the balance beam and floor exercise.
