The Warhawks carried over their momentum from Florida sweeping UW-Stevens Point Thursday, but lost it when they fell to Illinois Wesleyan University twice in a doubleheader Friday.

The ’Hawks are now 15-3 on the season and will play in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. today against UW-Oshkosh at home.

“Going 11-1 in Florida has been amazing start to our season,” junior pitcher Katie Boyle said. “It definitely gives our team the confidence we need heading through regular season, but we refuse to dwell on it because we want more wins.”

Boyle pitched well on Thursday against the Pointers, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out six for her sixth win of the year. The ’Hawks won 6-3.

“I give all the credit to my defense,” Boyle said. “They are making the ‘web gem’ plays that keep hitters off the bases.

“I worked on my drop ball a lot in the offseason, which has helped keep the ball on the ground to help the defense.”

Volk said that her pitchers, have been calm and collected on the mound. Especially considering the team only has one returning pitcher. The rest are freshmen or transfers.

Game two started out with a six-run inning from the ’Hawks that held until the seventh inning. The Pointers tied the game at seven in the top of the seventh when junior catcher Emily Epifanio stepped up to the plate.

“What I like about this team is when they get down, they don’t go into panic mode or anything,” Volk said.

Epifanio picked up her second home run of the year and the 9-7 win for her team in walk-off fashion.

The team feels it has been successful because of timely hitting  up and down the lineup.

“I think the secret of successful hitting is to hit the hitters pitch, not the pitchers pitch,” sophomore first baseman Morgan Krisch said.

However, against Illinois Wesleyan University, the ’Hawks struggled to hit. One of the team’s two hits was Epifanio’s third home run of the year.

The first game ended 9-1 after the Spartans scored seven runs in the sixth inning. Boyle took her first loss on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and striking out three.

In game two it was more of the same for the ’Hawks, recording only two hits and being run ruled in the bottom of the sixth, 8-0. The loss for junior pitcher Amy Christopher was her first this season.
