Women’s Cross Country: ’Hawks finish sixth out of nine in WIAC Championship

The Warhawks women’s cross country team took sixth out of ten teams at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet in Cuba City on Saturday.
Alyssa Duncan ran well on the course, which weaved through the Cole Acres Golf Course, and finished with a time of 22:30 to take eighth place individually. She set a new personal and team best by six seconds.

“I finished eighth place last year, so I was hoping to finish a little better,” Duncan said. “Overall I was still happy with eighth place and the time that I ran.”

Duncan narrowly missed the All-Conference team for the second year in a row. The top seven runners in the conference meet form the first team All-Conference team. Duncan was the top runner for the second team, which is made up of the finishers that took positions eight through fifteen.

The `Hawks finished sixth, improving one position from last year’s conference meet. Sophomore Amanda Brom finished 36th with a time of 23:36, with freshman Amy Kahl right behind with a time of 23:40. Senior Kristi Egnarski took 47th with a time of 23:52. Crossing the line in 56th with a time of 24:07 was freshman Emily Kahl.

Senior Alysha Rendflesh, had a time of 24:44 and was included on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

UW-Eau Claire won its sixth consecutive title in the meet, while UW-LaCrosse took home second.

Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh became the first woman in WIAC history to win three straight individual titles with a time of 21:16. The top seven individual runners not on a qualifying team advance to the Division III National Championship held in Terre Haute, Ind., the following week.

“We can beat more than half of the teams in the region,” head coach Jeff Miller said. “Alyssa Duncan also has a chance at being an individual qualifier.”
