Men’s Basketball: ‘Hawks keep winning streak alive, stay one back in WIAC

By Daniel Schoettler

The Warhawks men’s basketball team continued the run they’ve been on recently with an 84-53 win over UW-Superior Saturday night.  The ’Hawks have now won five in a row and improve to 19-4 overall, with an 11-3 record in the WIAC.

“Every game is important,” said sophomore guard Quardell Young. “As we win, we’re just trying to get better as a unit. We’re just looking to get better defensively and offensively as a team.”

The Warhawks were led by sophomore guard Quardell Young, who led the team with 17 points.  Sophomore guard KJ Evans also contributed 14 points in the victory.

“It was definitely a big performance,” Young said. “They beat us in Superior, so we had to bring some pressure to them.”

The Yellowjackets were led by Austin Cahill with 17 points. Aaron Curry followed him with nine points and Brian Lindblom contributed eight points for the Yellowjackets.

The Warhawks had a series of runs throughout the game, and the closest the Yellowjackets came to the Warhawks lead was 14.

The ’Hawks shot 55 percent from the field while UW-Superior shot 46 percent from the field. The Warhawks also shot 53 percent from the three-point line while UW-Superior shot 50 percent from the three-point arch.

The Warhawks forced 20 turnovers in the game which helped contribute to some of the runs the team had during the game. They also outrebounded UW-Superior 33-23.

The Warhawks’ next game is on Wednesday at UW-Oshkosh. They finish the regular season next Saturday at 4 p.m. against UW-River Falls at the Kachel Gymnasium.
