The Warhawks dominated offensively this weekend, hitting 13 home runs in four games en route to a four-game sweep over UW-Stout. “Offensively we’ve never looked better so it was a real positive weekend for us,” head coach John Vodenlich said. “The qualities of our bats were noticeable and I don’t think we made an easy out all weekend.”

After its spring training trip in Lake Myrtle, Fla., the Warhawk baseball team returns to campus with red-hot bats. The team went 5-2 in Florida from March 22-28, and won all four of its varsity reserve games in Florida, including a game against the Minnesota Twins’ single-A team.

With the recent rush of warm weather over the last few weeks, it is evident that spring is upon us, which means that baseball, too, is right around the corner. The UW-Whitewater baseball team has begun its season. The team is 2-2 and leaves for a trip to Lake Myrtle, Fla., tomorrow. The team will play nine games in just six days and will return home March 31 for a game against Ripon College.

Although things didn’t go the way it wanted them to this last week, the baseball team is still in prime position to make a postseason run. The Warhawks will travel to UW-Stevens Point to face UW-Oshkosh at 10 a.m. in the opening game of the WIAC tournament.

Donovan delivers in more than one way

Jeff Donovan earned WIAC player of the year honors while leading the football team to its fifth straight conference title and its second national championship in three years. Now, less than five months later, Donovan is at the helm of the baseball team’s WIAC championship and its own run to a national championship. For his efforts in both sports, the former Wauwatosa East High School star has been named the 2009-10 Royal Purple Male Athlete of the Year.
