Welcome back, Warhawks!
January is a time for renewal, reset, and intentions. Second semester is here and it’s your chance to start new habits that will lead to better well-being and academic success.
Before you can be successful in the classroom, you need to take care of YOU. The Well-being departments at UW-Whitewater, University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS), Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD), and the Dean of Students (DOS) are here to support and care for every Warhawk.
Well-being habits to consider:
- Prioritize your mental health. Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s one of the most generous things you can do for yourself and those around you.
- Sleep is not for the weak, it’s your superpower. Aim for 7-9 hours a week and try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
- Move your body. This does not have to mean a hard workout. Stretching, walking, dancing, and yoga all count as exercise.
- Stay connected with friends, family and campus resources. Asking for help is a strength.

Academic habits to consider:
- Make the most of Syllabus day – write or type every assignment, quiz, exam, and deadlines into your planner or electronic calendar. Start assignments and studying for quizzes/exams sooner than the day before they are due or given.
- Go to class even if attendance is not required and sit in the front of the classroom to minimize distractions. Approach college like a 9 to 5 job. Block your time and do homework and study between classes.
- Find a place to study other than the room you sleep in. Study without your phone in the same room to limit distractions.
- Visit your instructors during their office hours. Don’t rely on the grades you see in Canvas to determine how well you’re doing in the class. Ask your instructor directly and express your desire to do better.
Have a great semester!
