With the 'Hawks third straight Stagg Bowl victory over Mount Union, they extended their NCAA-leading consecutive win streak to 45 games. The team returned back to campus Saturday afternoon.
It wasn’t the game we all expected, but in the end, the No. 1 ranked Warhawk football team won its third straight NCAA Division-III National Title Friday night after defeating No. 2 Mount Union, 13-10.
It’s Game Day and Levell Coppage’s eyes are closed. He’s lying down and visualizing what will occur on the football field that day. He sees himself making hard cuts and breaking loose from defenders trying to take him down. He sees himself bursting through a gaping hole into the open field for a touchdown. “I’m a visual-type player,” Coppage said. “I like to picture things before I go out and do it.”
Underdog stories are highly coveted by fans, and it’s easy to understand why.
The long rush of excitement finally came to an end for the No. 24 (D3hoops.com) women’s basketball team Friday, when they lost to No. 16 University of Mount Union, 69-55, at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky.
They received a standing ovation at a Wisconsin Badger basketball game. They have been recognized by the Whitewater Common Council. They even mingled and shared a few laughs with Gov. Jim Doyle at his mansion in Madison. It’s been quite the ride for the football team since defeating Mount Union College (Alliance, Ohio), 38-28, on Dec. 19 to win the program’s second national championship in three years. However, with the first of 15 spring practices beginning today, senior wide receiver Aaron Rusch already has his eye on the 2010 season.
The 2009 season will not be forgotten anytime soon. It was a season the UW-Whitewater football team dominated for much of the year. It was a season where numerous team and individual records were broken. And it was a season that ended in the most dramatic fashion on Division III’s grandest stage.
The pieces have been in place all season. Now, more than three months after the football team’s opening game in Dickinson, N.D., the puzzle is almost complete. This final piece to the Warhawks’ perfect campaign and second national championship in the last three years could be put into place Saturday in Salem, Va.
