Outdoor Club returns to UW-W

After a five-year break, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Outdoor Club is back and says it’s ready to cater to “hardcore outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy camping, rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, paddling and mountain biking.”

Thirty active members are led by a student executive board, and together they embark on local and national trips.

Although the club’s description targets “hardcore outdoor enthusiasts,” co-president Meredith Huber said all students are welcome to join, regardless of physical fitness or affinity with the outdoors.

“We have club members of all skill levels, so do not feel discouraged if you are inexperienced or not necessarily athletic,” Huber said. “A big part of our club is educating people about different skills and safety when it comes to outdoor recreation. We make sure our members are equipped with the right knowledge and gear before we do any sort of activity.”

Huber added that the great thing about outdoor recreation is that people can make it as easy or as extreme as they want.

“Extreme” is one word the club does not shy away from. Huber said the group took an extended trip to South Dakota during spring break this past April.

“We camped in Custer State Park and got to experience the Black Hills National Forest, Badlands National Park [and] Mount Rushmore National Monument,” Huber said.

“We currently are planning for a couple different day trips to Devil’s Lake, Boulders Climbing Gym and we are finalizing our spring trip which most likely will be to the Smokey Mountains,” executive board member Jake Manser said.

Dues are set at $25 per semester, and most equipment is provided by the club, including packs, canoes, camping stoves and sleeping bags. The fees for the club also go toward gas spent on trips and food costs. Circumstances of various trips could affect costs, depending partly on participation levels, Manser said.

Students looking to become further involved on campus can attend the club’s open meetings at 6 p.m. every Wednesday in Hyland Hall Room 1307.
