Invested in Intramurals

With almost 25% student participation, intramural sports hold a significant position at UW-Whitewater, allowing so many students a release from their day-to-day schoolwork routines.

The intramural sports program boasts four different quarters throughout the academic year filled with sports. They are currently in their first quarter, hosting an outdoor season that boasts many popular sports, including sand volleyball, flag football, and their newest edition, 3-on-3 basketball.

“What makes us unique is we focus on overall participant experience,” said Assistant Director of Intramural and Club Sports Matt Schneider. “We’re very receptive to feedback and suggestions. We want everyone to come here and have a good time.”

In addition to having many students participate in intramural sports, the office also employs many of the students. Each academic year, the office aims to hire somewhere between 85 and 100 students. Last academic year they hired 88.

“The community set up within this building is amazing, it never feels like work,” said Marketing and Promotions Coordinator Kate Amerling. “Many of us do sports as well, it’s a work hard, play hard mentality here.”

Some students only participate in one or two intramural sports on campus, while other students join many. Junior Whitney Treader has participated in many intramural sports on campus, including sand volleyball, racquetball, flag football, and many others. She also holds three positions in the recreation sports office, working as an office assistant, building supervisor, and intramural supervisor.

“I got to meet a lot of people,” said Treader. “You kind of have more fun [in intramurals] than doing competitive sports, it’s more relaxed.”

The intramural sports themselves often hold events that make them all the more fun and enjoyable. This quarter, flag football held a combine for its players.

“It’s really fun for the players,” said Intramural Sports Flag Football Coordinator Derek Reeves. “It’s like doing an NFL combine, they get to throw the ball around and have some extra fun.”

Sign-ups for the next season of intramural sports start October 9th.
